Janice’s father, Robert Mathers (1955-2031), was a homebuilder who moved to Southaven from Memphis in 1980 to take part in Southaven’s building boom. Her mother, Tori Shock (1970-2054), is a real estate agent. Janice was an only child.  Her parents tried unsuccessfully to have another child.

In 2020, Mathers married Florida State Senator Troy Lane who was running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.  After Lane lost his election, the Hoagland Institute hired him as a state lobbyist in Tallahassee.  He was deemed unsuitable for genetic augmentation.  During the early days of the DNV, Lane became infected by Allison Uhlrich of client relations binding him to her.  Uhrich had no interest in him and eventually filed a restraining order against him.  Mathers and Lane's marriage never fully recovered.  In 2030, Mathers relocated to Barrett Base and Lane accompanied her.  Lane met Lindsey Huzier in a bar on Barrett Base's promenade on Christmas Eve 2034 and was seduced by her.  he was her boyfriend for less than three weeks before receiving a beating from her which destroyed his spleen.  Mathers divorced Lane in February 2035.
